Insomnia and other sleeping problems are very common these days, affecting most of us at least periodically. Fortunately, there are many easy, natural ways to improve your sleep habits – here are some:
- Ensure the right environment – the quality of the mattress, of the pillow and of the bed linen is essential for good sleep and so is the light and the temperature in the bedroom. Get a mattress and pillows that are not too soft, but not too stiff either; keep the temperature at the lowest setting that still feels comfortable and remove all the electrical gadgets and devices from the room, too;
- Physical exercise – getting physically tired is the best way to ensure good sleep. Include at least three exercise sessions per week – the change will relax your body and your mind and will make your sleep more relaxing by prolonging the time you spend in deep sleep;
- Avoid heavy meals and stimulants a couple of hours before bedtime – make your dinner as light as possible and try to avoid meat, coffee, nicotine and alcoholic beverages 3-4 hours before bedtime;
- Avoid naps in the afternoon – even a short, 20-minute nap can interfere with your sleep, so try to stay awake during the afternoon, even if you feel drowsy.
